“It was very different and that’s what I needed,” he says of Elevation. “Yes, you can get through a high school course more quickly, but it’s not just about speed. Because it’s individual, you get to focus on what matters to you. Not everyone is equally smart at every single subject. Someone like me, I just have a horrible time with math. English? I can roll through it. That allows me to spend more time on the areas that I need help with. And ask more questions.”

While it took him a little while to adjust to the different environment, he adapted quickly. “I had to re-find my work ethic. But once I found my place? I just took off from there. On the dashboard, you can literally see your progress. You see your results. As you close a class and see the bar go up, you realize, “Alright, I got this. I can do this.’ It works for me.”

Gabiola was caught off guard when she was told she wasn’t on pace to graduate. “I had no idea. I was never aware I was behind. Then I find out that I’m only one credit behind, but I’m going to need a whole extra year to graduate? I don’t have that kind of time.” Things were a lot different for Gabiola at Elevation. “Now?  I know exactly how many credits I have.”

“I’m not going to lie,” Giovanni admits, “but when first got here, I was worried. I came here from New York, and these classrooms seem really small and really quiet. I worried about it feeling isolated. But in the end, I liked it. Some kids struggle when it’s too noisy and get distracted. But the way they have things set up here are great.”
